ABOUT STEAMRAIL Steamrail's workshops are located in part of the heritage railway workshops located at Newport. These facilities date back to the 1880's and were actually the birthplace of many of our locomotives and carriages. These facilities enable us to carry out restorations and overhauls to our fleet to keep the up to one-hundred-year-old vehicles in regular operation.
GET INVOLVED It doesn't matter what you do or have done in your day job, we need and can use your assistance. Everything from skilled engineering to clerical, gardening and cleaning tasks need to be done and in most cases no previous railway experience is required. In any case, you can soon gain this experience and training along with the satisfaction of being part of it all.
Here are just some of the occupations/skills we need:
Bricklayers, Gardeners, Journalists, Publicity, Fettlers (maintenance of track infrastructure), Plumbers, Electricians (240/415vAC, 24/32vDC), Car Conductors, Shunters, Draftsmen, Engineers (mechanical, electrical, structural), Tour planners, Painters (brush, spray), Boiler Makers, Welders, Builders, Accountants, Bookkeepers, Banking skills, Secretarial skills, Signwriters, Management skills, Cleaners (Depot, Carriages, Engines), Carpenters, Carriage Builders, Telephone answering, Purchasing, Stock Control, Inventory Management skills, Upholsterers, Cabinet Makers, Boiler attendants, Diesel mechanics, Glaziers, Toolmakers, Fitters and Turners, Forklift driver, Backhoe operators.
All these skills and more help to keep Steamrail operating. You can devote as much or as little time as you like to Steamrail, and some tasks can even be done at home. For some railway specific tasks, we provide training and certification.
Volunteers under 15 years are welcome, but you will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while volunteering.
If you are interested and think you might like to help with a specific project or with the on-going operations, you may like to come down to the depot and inspect the current work in hand and talk to someone about what you can do.
