WHAT IS STEAMRAIL?

Steamrail Victoria is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the restoration and operation of vintage steam, diesel and electric engines and carriages.  We operate all over the Victorian broad gauge railway network offering a variety of tours for all tastes.  We regularly run both day and weekend tours to interesting and popular destinations.

Established since 1965, Steamrail currently has a fleet of five operating steam locomotives, five operating heritage diesels and one electric locomotive, as well as a fleet of suburban ‘red rattlers’.  The Steamrail carriage fleet comprises of some thirty cars, including sitting, sleeping and specialist vehicles.  These vehicles date back to the early 20th century and feature comfortable seating and most have varnished wood panelling and opening windows.  Trains have a kiosk car and most include a licenced bar.

Our workshops are located in part of the heritage railway workshops located at Newport.  These facilities date back to the 1880’s and were actually the birthplace of many of our locomotives and carriages.  These facilities enable us to carry out restorations and overhauls to our fleet to keep the up to one-hundred-year-old vehicles in regular operation.

WHO DOES ALL THIS?

Steamrail relies on an small core of highly dedicated specialist staff supported by a large team of volunteers. They all work to restore, maintain and operate the extensive fleet of locomotives and rolling stock as well as the associated depot and support facilities.
