The 'Y' Class diesel was introduced as a light weight branch line and shunting locomotive. It used second hand bogies and traction motors sourced from scrapped 'dogbox' suburban trains.

Y164 was the first diesel electric locomotive allocated to Steamrail Victoria. Y164, the standby workshops pilot from Ballarat, was transferred to South Dynon as a temporary replacement for Y140, the Diesel Maintenance workshops "pet" loco, which was to be taken out of service for a spruce up. Unfortunately for Y140, further investigation found that the loco was in worse condition that first thought and that the repairs required would be too costly to be justified. For the reason, it was decided that Y140 would be returned to service as it was. This left Y164 surplus to requirements at South Dynon. Shortly after this, the loco was offered to Dieselrail for preservation. The offer was accepted and on the 26th of February 1991, Y164 arrived at Newport. |
